Want to make your vehicle quieter inside? Reduce road noise? Make your stereo sound great? You can do this on your own starting at around $150. Sound dampening: The key to a quieter car is sound proofing placed inside the doors, under the carpet, in the trunk, and even under the engine hood. You can do this yourself or have some place do it professionally. But be warned, the labor for this kind of thing costs more than materials so if you have the inclination and time, you're better off doing it on your own. You'll save a lot of money. You can buy soundproofing under the following brand names:
Where to buy: I've found the cheapest places, by far, to purchase these materials are EBay, Amazon, or one of the other online auction-type sites. You can also purchase it at audio shops or some electronics stores that sell car audio equipment. I also recommend Crutchfield. They sell Dynamat and other materials you'll need such as rollers, pry bars to remove door panels, and utility knives. But even better than that, they send you schema on your particular car that shows how to remove door panels, speakers, the stereo itself (if you want to replace that too), etc. Great reviews and discussions: These are great places to read about other people's experiences with install sound deadening products, view pictures of installations, and read about tips and hints for a smooth install:
